Traditionally a network that focuses strongly on data (geek fact of the day – the name Vodafone is made up of VOice and DAta Fone) Vodafone too have a variety of plans available for all types of usage, including fixed term contracts over 12, 18 or 24 months and a PAYG option.

Vodafone fare well for coverage, and also for speed, offering two types of USB modems, the Stick Modem and Stick Modem Pro. The Stick Modem will handle speeds of up to 3.6Mbps where coverage is available, whilst the Stick Modem Pro will take speeds up to 7.2Mbps. The PAYG offering is only available on the standard 3.6Mbps modem.

12, 18, 24 month option

£15 Monthly Cost with a 3GB Allowance
£25 Monthly Cost with a 5GB Allowance

The plans are simple enough, and are the same for whichever contract option and whichever usb modem you choose. The incentive for signing the longer contracts come in a special offer Vodafone are currently offering, with the first three months on an 18 month contract charged at £10 per month on the 3GB data tariff, or the first three months totally free on a 24 month 3GB a month package. On the 24 month 5GB deal, the first three months are just £15 a month.

Vodafone also offer a PAYG USB Modem, and it is the only PAYG option currently on the market with no time expiry on the top up. This makes it an excellent choice for the infrequent traveller, because the data lasts for as long as it takes you to use it. With other networks, if you do not use in a month the data you have purchased, you lose what is remaining and will have to top up again to keep using the product. Top ups for the Vodafone dongle cost £15 which buys 1GB of data

Out of bundle charges on Vodafone are charged in 1GB increments, the current rate is currently £15 per GB.

Another option on Vodafone USB Modem is the option to purchase a Samsung NC10 Notebook with mobile connectivity already built in. No need for a modem, as all the technology, SIM card included, is built into the device. Vodafone offer the NC10 free on two tariffs, both 24 month agreements:

£25 Monthly Cost with 1GB Allowance
£30 Monthly Cost with 3GB Allowance

The NC10 is superior to the Dell notebook previously sold by Vodafone, with a much clearer screen, better spec and a much improved keyboard. Out of bundle data charges on the notebook are equivalent to the charges on the USB Modems.

T-Mobile doesn’t have out of bundle charges, hence the emphasis on the fair use of the data allowance. Abusers will be barred from the network, to make it fair for all; users who just generally go over their data bundle by small amounts here and there have nothing to worry about

As well as contract options, O2 also bring a PAYG option, which has a three tier pricing structure, similar to that found on T-Mobile. A £2 daily charge offers 500MB and unlimited WiFi, £7.50 includes 1GB and unlimited WiFi and £15 offers 3GB and unlimited WiFi. The packages have two time out limits, either the amount of time or the amount of data paid for.

The Orange network offer tariffs for mobile internet use from as little as £4.89 per month, although that tariff is reserved for existing customers. Standard Orange deals for Mobile Broadband are currently available on 18 month and 30 day contract options.

Three have a strong package of mobile broadband tariffs, with a generous amount of inclusive data allocated to each tariff, starting from just £10 per month

In keeping with the Virgin ethos of using simplicity there is just one plan, offering 3GB of data for £15 a month. If you go over this allowance, you will be charged at 1.46p per MB.
