According to the OfCom coverage maps, Three’s 3G network coverage is the best there is in the UK, so for competitive pricing and good coverage, Three is a good place to start. Aside from the standard costs, there are other things to keep in mind. The data bundles provided cover all usage, not just downloading. Surfing the web incurs data charges, whatever your usage. Every time you click on a link, you are sending a request to a server for that web page to be downloaded to your PC. An element of data is transferred for the request, and data amounts are charged as the web page loads. Web pages that are heavy on text will have a smaller size than webpage which are heavy on images. Should you go outside your data allowance, charges are incurred for ‘out of bundle’ data, much the same as you pay per call if you have used all your inclusive minutes. With Three, every out of bundle MB is charged at 10p on a contract deal, whilst on Pay As You Go the cost is 30p per MB.

It is not a precise science trying to estimate how much data you will need each month, as each web page differs in data size. So it is not the amount of time you spend online that makes the difference, rather your usage itself.

If you use your usage is mainly to download emails on an infrequent basis during the month, with perhaps a little bit of instant messaging use, then generally the lower data amounts should suffice. Add in general web browsing, and depending on how frequently you do this, then you will need either a mid tier or high tier tariff. What is not recommended when using a Mobile Broadband USB Modem is using services such as the BBC iPlayer, or downloading music of video from places such as iTunes, as video and music files are comparatively large, in terms of data, and you will find the data allowance will soon go. You will generally find, however, that most sites have a ‘data calculator’ which you can use to estimate your monthly data requirement by answering a few questions on your intended usage. Just keep in mind the imprecise nature of such predictions, and if you find your usage very close to the allowance of one particular tariff, a higher tariff may be of better value for you overall.

The plans are simple enough, and are the same for whichever contract option and whichever modem you choose. The incentive for signing the longer contracts come in a special offer Vodafone are currently offering, with the first three months on an 18 month contract charged at £10 per month on the 3GB data tariff, or the first three months totally free on a 24 month 3GB a month package. On the 24 month 5GB deal, the first three months are just £15 a month.

T-Mobile doesn’t have out of bundle charges, hence the emphasis on the fair use of the data allowance. Abusers will be barred from the network, to make it fair for all; users who just generally go over their data bundle by small amounts here and there have nothing to worry about

As well as contract options, O2 also bring a PAYG option, which has a three tier pricing structure, similar to that found on T-Mobile. A £2 daily charge offers 500MB and unlimited WiFi, £7.50 includes 1GB and unlimited WiFi and £15 offers 3GB and unlimited WiFi. The packages have two time out limits, either the amount of time or the amount of data paid for.

The Orange network offer tariffs for mobile internet use from as little as £4.89 per month, although that tariff is reserved for existing customers. Standard Orange deals for Mobile Broadband are currently available on 18 month and 30 day contract options.

In keeping with the Virgin ethos of using simplicity there is just one plan, offering 3GB of data for £15 a month. If you go over this allowance, you will be charged at 1.46p per MB.
