T-Mobile
have come a long way over the last few years, and have
worked hard to shed the ‘student’ tag they earned back in
the One2One days. From being somewhat the butt of jokes
within the industry regarding network coverage, T-Mobile now
offer excellent reach for voice coverage and a 3G data
network that is the equivalent to Vodafone, judging by the
OfCom coverage maps. They also won the Best Network award
from the Mobile Data Association in August 2008.
T-Mobile’s stance on Mobile USB Modems is to offer two
contract options, alongside a package that is charged for on
a daily basis, so you only pay for it on the day you use it.
The modem used on T-Mobile offers high speed data transfer,
with support included for both HSDPA at up to 7.2Mbps and
HSUPA at up to 2Mbps.

T-Mobile doesn’t
have out of bundle charges, hence the emphasis on the fair
use of the data allowance. Abusers will be barred from the
network, to make it fair for all; users who just generally
go over their data bundle by small amounts here and there
have nothing to worry about, and if you consistently go over
your bundle by large amounts and don’t reign in your usage,
T-Mobile will moderate the speeds available to you,
depending on how often and by how much you go over your plan
allowance.
Another option with the T-Mobile data plans is the inclusion
of access to the T-Mobile WiFi Hotspot service, which offers
around 300 hotspots nationwide. Also the technology used in
the T-Mobile USB Modem is worth a mention, as
it incorporates Receive Diversity. This allows for a
stronger signal on the laptop in poorer reception areas,
using technology that reflects signals of hills and
buildings.
The USB Modem used on the PAYG option is different to the
contract options, so only offers data transfer speeds of up
to 3.6Mbps. Charges are either £2 per day, £7 for a week or
£15 for a month. If you know what your requirements are
ahead of schedule, all you end up paying for is the time you
use, there are no long term commitments. This plan comes
with a fair use monthly data allowance of 3GB.
Lastly, a quick mention to the Mobile Broadband Share Dock.
This item allows you to share your broadband connection with
up to five users via WiFi. Simply plug the USB Modem into
the Share Dock and users connect to it via WiFi from their
own device, whilst the modem itself connects to the network
in a standard mobile data connection. This product costs £20
per month with a 3GB fair use data allowance.
